Netflix:
Cabinet of Curiosities

I had the chance to work on a special series created by famed fantasy horror director Guillermo del Toro. The series is called “Cabinet of Curiosities”
and is a collection of the Oscar-winning filmmaker's personally curated stories, described as sophisticated and horrific. Del Toro introduces each episode. Del Toro credits Rod Serling’s Night Gallery as one of the inspirations for his Cabinet of Curiosities, specifically in the manner with which Serling opens and closes each episode.

Client: Netflix
Agency: Lafayette American
Partners: Justin Erickson, Todd Baxter and Midnight Oil
Role: Creative Director

Design Treatment

The series tells tales about objects from a cabinet, and Guillermo introduces each episode showing one of the objects pertaining to the plot.

We were asked to use the cabinet, the objects, and Guillermo in a design that ties them together. We came up with a design showing Guillermo’s head to be holding the objects, like the cabinet.

The look came from rough sketches we did, and then tightened up with the help of designer Justin Erickson. Then the design was completed and animated by Todd Baxter and Midnight Oil.
